One of the most popular place in Amritsar is Wagah Border.The international border between India and Pakistan. Wagah, An army outpost on Indo-Pak border – between Amritsar and Lahore. The border is located 24 kilometres from Lahore and 32 kilometres from Amritsar.


The Wagah Border Ceremony, more popularly known as Beating Retreat Ceremony, was started in 1959 and it was agreed by the government of both the countries. It is a symbol of the rivalry between the two nations, as well as the cooperation and brotherhood of both the nations.

Wagah-Attari Border Ceremony

This place can be considered as a very famous tourist spot owing to its beating retreat ceremony which is held every day for 2 hours just before the sunset. The ceremony is participated by soldiers of Border Security Forces (BSF) from India and Pakistan Rangers from Pakistan.

The daily highlight is the evening “Beating the Retreat” ceremony. Soldiers from both countries march in perfect drill, going through the steps of bringing down their respective national flags.

 The Beating Retreat ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime entertaining experience. You can enjoy a parade between the soldiers of India and Pakistan during the event. The songs, dance and loud cheers can fill anyone with a patriotic spirit. 


The ceremony takes place every day and so many people rush to watch it, if in town. There is a crowd of 2000 and more on weekdays.

Flag ceremony

The ceremony at Wagah border consists of flag raising and lowering simultaneously.This ceremony is fully conducted by the BSF on the Indian side and the Rangers on Pakistan’s side.The military forces from both the sides lower their country’s respective flags simultaneously and give crisp handshakes to each other and complete the ceremony in the most organized and disciplined manner.
